MANAGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL WISDOM AMONG THE MAVILAN OF KASARGOD DISTRICT, KERALA

Abstract

Connectedness with indigenous populace within the confines of their area of resources shed light on how an unsaid language could be utilized to communicate with the nature to a culture of a group of people. Mavilan is a tribal populace in
Kasaragod district in the Hosdurg Taluk. A number of versions have been there regarding the origin of the Mavilan Gotra. They are the Tulu dialect speaking tribal group and culture, rituals, and beliefs of Mavilan are unique so as to possess specific ethnic identity. Their major settlements are situated at Chengala, Puthigae,Karadukka, Kodom, Belloor, Kinnanur, Karimthalam, Badiyadukka, Balal, Kallar, and Panathady Panchayats of Kasaragod district. Understanding traditional wisdom sharpens values, ethics, beliefs, and rules of indigenous people from their way of interpretations by considering the elements of their physical boundary. The purpose of this paper to introduce unshielded experiences of community members acquired through intuition and empiricism. The importance of understanding the local knowledge and to make it safe for the coming generations as a source of information for conservation, imparts a distinctive flavor to the best way of reserving the changing traditions that contributed ecological balance.
