REVISITING THE DISCOURSES ON KERALA ISLAMIC NAVODHANAM: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MANNALAMKUNNU’S ENGAGEMENTS

Abstract
This paper seeks to understand the critiques of the dominant discourses on Kerala Islamic Navodhanam. Navodhanam has been one of the most significant discussions in the study of Kerala Islam and Muslim since the dawn of the new millennium. Though many disputes and debates over theological topics have been taking place between various Islamic organizations across the state for decades, none of them seriously dealt with the question of navodhanam. Such engagements began to emerge as counterdiscourses to the domineering Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen discourses in postmillennium Kerala. They originated with the critical interventions made by a group of independent scholars, Zainudheen Mannalamkunnu, K. Aboobakker, and Dr. P.A. Aboobakker. This paper attempts to critically examine the writings of Mannalamkunnu in which he revisits the dominant Islamic navodhanam narratives in Kerala.
