FEMALE MIGRATION IN INDIA: EXPLORING TREND, PATTERN AND DETERMINANTS

Abstract

Migration indicates transition of a person’s primary residence from one location to
another. With expansion of capitalist economic system, rate of migration has stepped
with wide-ranging movements of wealth and human resources accelerated by
globalization. Economy of host nation benefits greatly from the contributions of
migrants. In 2022, India set a new annual record for remittances with $100 billion
followed by Mexico and China. However, unlike rest of the globe, India has long
had a significantly higher female migration rate than male migration rate. This paper
makes an effort to examine the trend, pattern and major factors that determines
female migration in India. One of the objectives of this paper is to examine the
reason, trend and spatial characteristics of long-distance female interstate migration
in India by utilising secondary data from Indian Census, NSSO, PLFS, Economic
reviews and IOM Migration Data Portal.
