Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Physical Activity and Sports in Goa

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of Covid-19 on sportspersons in Goa. India. Data were collected from 314 participant sportspersons through google form using a selfmade questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, percentage analysis, and chi-square were used to present the responses of participants (79% male and 21?male). The study results indicate that Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the sporting career and severely restricted the daily routine of participants. Unable to participate in training sessions/competitions, lack of facilities and avenues for training, lack of support of coaches were the major problems faced by participants. With the uncertainty of returning to normal, lack of keeping oneself motivated and increase in frustration and depression were also other issues faced by the participants. Participants also reported of increasing financial crisis in pursuing their sporting career due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic. Association was observed for sports category (contact sport and non-contact sport) with respect to responses of participants in terms of training sessions, training facilities and financial crisis expected due to the pandemic.
